My Paediatric training involved a large section on pregnancy and how to treat the ailments that mothers-to-be may have. I have a special interest in recurrent miscarriage and have successfully treated women who usually miscarry around the 6-8 week mark. With the help of well selected remedies these women have gone on to have healthy babies.
Pregnancy is a fantastic time to have homeopathy as it is a time when many women are unable or unwilling to take drugs prescribed by the doctor.
Homeopathy is very successful with:
- morning sickness,
- anaemia,
- piles,
- heartburn,
- insomnia,
- high blood pressure,
- ligament pain such as sciatica,
- and many other pregnancy-related symptoms
I also use a Pregnancy Programme of remedies chosen specifically to match the months of pregnancy. These are extremely useful for women who suffer extreme morning sickness, those who have had more than one child and women who work full-time. They help with heartburn, piles, congestion etc that often occurs in pregnancy. During the run up to the birth, many women experience discomfort and/or anxiety. I support women with homeopathy to ease any discomfort or fears about the impending birth.
BIRTH
I have trained as a doula so am able to partner a mother at birth to help provide as successful a birth as possible. Remedies can be used to turn a breech baby at around 34 weeks into the pregnancy, induce a baby that is overdue and about to be induced in the hospital, and speed up contractions that have stopped or are ineffective.
I also provide homeopathic birth kits for the father or birth support partner to use.
After the birth, remedies are used to help with bruising, excessive bleeding, episiotomy repair etc.
NEWBORN BABIES
The month post-birth is a particularly vulnerable time for a new mother and baby. Firstly, breastfeeding is not without its difficulties and the expectant mother is given a selection of remedies to take at the first sign of nipple damage and pain. Many babies develop sticky eye which is often treated with antibiotics. However there is a very successful remedy that the baby usually needs to take just once which clears up the problem.
Post-natal depression is something that I keep a close eye on so that my patients can be treated successfully before it becomes entrenched. Birth is a time when hormones are changing rapidly and this coupled with lack of sleep can lead to depression in the new mother.
Failure to thrive in the baby is also usually treated rapidly and successfully. The newborn needs a remedy to balance itself and start absorbing the nutrients provided by the milk. It is an often heard complaint from new mothers that their milk is not good enough or there is not enough of it. This is easily rectified producing good, rich milk for the baby to thrive on.
Mastitis is incredibly debilitating and even dangerous if left untreated. Again, the antibiotic approach is not the ideal answer as this disrupts the babies immature gut flora as well as that of the mother. The new mother is provided with a remedy to take at the first sign of tenderness and redness in the breast which is a pointer towards blocked ducts leading to infection. The infection is halted and normal feeding is resumed.
Colic is one of the hardest things for new parents to deal with. Incessant crying in the evening when parents are tired and emotional is incredibly hard especially as nothing seems to help the baby in its distress. When I see babies with colic, I prescribe the remedies and then telephone the mother every day until the problem is sorted. Sometimes two or three different remedies are needed so I like to be on the end of the phone to get this problem sorted as soon as possible, to save the undoubted stress on the baby and family.
These are just some of the commonest problems facing new mums. Many other issues can be tackled successfully and safely using homeopathic remedies.
